Small Steps to Health and Wealth: A New Year's Resolution That Will Work

Every New Year’s, people make resolutions for the coming year. Often these relate to getting healthier (add exercise, or lose weight) and wealthier (reduce debt, increase savings, or spend more wisely). Not surprising after a quick look at some statistics.

An estimated 64 percent of Americans are overweight or obese according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. As for finances, the savings rate of U.S. households is at historic lows, the levels of household debt and bankruptcy filings have increased, and average household net worth is less than $100,000. In addition, 36% of working adults haven’t started saving for retirement while another 16% have $10,000 or less in retirement savings.

What’s wrong with this picture? Almost everyone except the desperately ill and poor can do something to improve their health and wealth situation. How can you make sure your health and wealth resolutions become reality?

Start by participating in the new University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension program, Small Steps to Health and Wealth. After setting your own health and wealth goals, you’ll learn 25 strategies for reaching those goals, and receive encouragement to stick with your goals.

This 13-week computer based program begins January 29 and continues each Thursday from 11:15 to noon MT until April 30. All you need to participate is a computer with Internet access and a phone line to connect to the live broadcast through a toll free number. For your convenience workshops will be recorded so you can view them at a later time. No phone line will be needed for the recorded sessions.

Registration fee includes a workbook to help you set your goals. Register on-line at Small Steps Nebraska website. On the website you will find a list of support groups forming across the state. For more information locally or to register you own support group, contact UNL Extension in Deuel Co, 308-874-2705 or toll free 1-866-865-1701.
